Wow—who can believe that August is here?! This summer is flying by. Summertime for us means lots of harvesting and lots of time spent on weeding projects. We’re also planting many of our fall crops, including more broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale and Brussels sprouts. For now, though, we have an abundance of summer goodies for you. Here’s your CSA box preview for the week:
Kohlrabi: Some people think of kohlrabi as a small turnip-like cabbage. Just peel off the thick peel with a knife and enjoy the crunchy white interior. They are actually awesome with any kind of veggie dip, or sliced and added to salads for some crunch. Here’s an article with some fun facts about kohlrabi and a few recipes.
Cherry tomatoes: A mix of orange Sungold and red Sweet Million cherry tomatoes. We love them in our Cool Summer Pasta Salad.
Sweet red roasting pepper: This a Carmen Sweet pepper, an Italian type popular for roasting. Can be enjoyed raw like a bell pepper, too!
Garlic: This is Oregon Blue garlic, a Northwest heirloom with a nice hot flavor.
Sweet Spanish white onion: Wonderful for anything oniony, but we especially love this variety in a homemade salsa.
Cilantro: Use some of this fresh herb along with your lemon cukes to make this Cilantro Lime Cucumber Salad. We also love fresh cilantro in breakfast burritos.
